JCT Empowers Child Parliamentarians
JCT and partners host training session for Bulawayo, Tsholotsho and Chiredzi Junior Assembly
In September 2019, JCT in partnership with Plan International and Women and Law in Southern Africa (WLSA) trained the Bulawayo, Tsholotsho and Chiredzi Junior Assembly on various child protection areas including child rights and responsibilities; sexual and reproductive health rights and sexual offences; personal development; advocacy; public resource management; communication and visibility; gender as well as community mobilization. The Junior Assembly is a platform that aims to provide children in leadership positions with an opportunity to reflect on their experiences and discuss their needs and those of their peers with duty bearers or adults who are in leadership positions in their communities. It consists of the Junior parliamentarians, the Junior councillors and youth –led groups. The training of the Bulawayo and Tsholotsho Junior Assembly took place on 4-7 September at Hwange Safari Lodge, while those from Chiredzi were trained from 12- 13 September at Norma Jean Lakeview Resort in Masvingo. Through the trainings, JCT sought to capacitate the child rights campaigners to effectively discharge their mandates in representing the interests of children and ensuring that their communities protect children. A manual covering the training topics has been developed for use by the Junior Parliamentarians.
